A huge lake in the southern part of the Northwest Territories, Canada. It has an area of 28,440 km2, a maximum depth of 613 m, and an elevation of 156 m. It is one of the great lakes on the edge of the Canadian Shield. Many rivers, including the Slave River, flow into it, and it becomes the Mackenzie River, which flows out into the Arctic Ocean. It is surrounded by taiga and tundra. Trout, salmon, and other fish are harvested here. Yellow Knife on the north shore is the administrative center of the Territories and is also known as a gold mine. The lake was discovered in 1771 by the British explorer S. Hearne.
