A general term for marine fishes belonging to the family Lophiidae (Anglerfishes). Widely distributed from temperate to tropical regions, they inhabit the somewhat deep seabed in coastal areas. The body is black-brown, and the head is disk-shaped and significantly flattened vertically, as if it had been crushed from above. The skin is smooth and scale-free, with many cortical projections. There are three to four spines in the front of the dorsal fin that are free from each other. The first spine is the longest and is located near the tip of the snout, and its tip is modified into a skin flap that is swung to attract and prey on small fish.

アンコウ目アンコウ科Lophiidaeに属する海水魚の総称。温帯から熱帯にかけて広く分布し，沿岸域のやや深い海底にすむ。体色は黒褐色で，頭部は円盤状をなし上から押しつぶされたように著しく縦扁している。皮膚はうろこがなく滑らかで，多くの皮質突起を生じている。背びれ前部の棘条（きよくじよう）は3～4本が互いに遊離している。第1棘は吻端（ふんたん）近くにあってもっとも長く，その先端は変形し皮弁になり，これを揺り動かし，小魚を誘引して捕食する。
