...Monadnock, proposed by geomorphologist WM Davis after the example of Mount Monodnock in New Hampshire, USA, has become the term for this type of landform. The German school calls it Restberg, and divides it into two categories: Härtling, which is made of relatively harder rock than the surrounding area and therefore eroded slowly, and Fernling, which protrudes because it has been at the watershed since the beginning of the erosion cycle. There are no good examples in Japan, as there are no typical peneplains, but mountain peaks protruding from constant-height mountain ridges are interpreted as a type of remnant hill. ...
