Year of death: 4th year of Kenkyu (1193) Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. The sixth son (fifth according to one theory) of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. His mother was a prostitute from Ikeda-juku in Totomi Province (Toyota Town, Shizuoka Prefecture). He was born in Kamagyo (Hamamatsu City) near Ikeda, so he was called Kamagoshi, and was raised by a mid-ranking aristocrat in Kyoto, Fujiwara (Takakura) Suenori, and it is believed that he took one character from his given name and took the name Noriyori. It appears that he joined his half-brother Yoritomo shortly after he raised an army in 1180 (Jisho 4), and in 1184 (Genryaku 1), he marched with his half-brother Yoshitsune as Yoritomo's magistrate and one of the great generals in the pursuit of Minamoto no Yoshinaka (Kiso) and the battle against the Taira clan at Ichinotani in Settsu, winning victories, and in June of the same year, he was appointed Sangawa no Kami by Yoritomo's recommendation. In August, he marched out again to pursue the Taira clan, but the fighting dragged on and made no progress, and finally Yoshitsune joined the battle and attacked, destroying the Taira clan at Dannoura in Nagato in March 1185. Noriyori returned to the east after dealing with the aftermath of the war in Kyushu, and in contrast to Yoshitsune, who came into conflict with Yoritomo and fell into ruin, he always swore to be obedient to Yoritomo and to have no ulterior motives, but in 1193, suspicion arose over his handling of the Soga brothers' revenge incident, and he was exiled in Shuzenji, Izu (though there are other theories). <References> Noguchi Minoru, "The Path of Minamoto Noriyori" (Kamakura, No. 65) (Takao Sugihashi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
