A gear used in automatic machines and feed devices, etc., is used to repeatedly rotate a driven shaft and then stop it for a certain period of time. The simplest type is one in which only some of the teeth of the gear on the driving shaft (driving gear) are provided, and rotation is transmitted only while it is meshed with the gear on the driven shaft (driven gear). However, because this type of device starts and stops suddenly, a pin device is generally used to reduce the impulse. Geneva gears are a typical example. Note that this type of gear device is usually used in conjunction with a locking device to ensure that the driven shaft is stopped.
