329‐389 A Greek Church Father who contributed to the establishment of the Nicene faith. One of the Cappadocian Triumvirate. Son of the bishop of Nazianzos (now Nenezi) in Cappadocia. He studied in Athens and became friends with Basil the Great there. He returned to his hometown and became a priest against his will. He was later appointed bishop of the newly established city of Sasima, but he refused and served as his father's assistant bishop in Nazianzos. After his father's death, he retired to Seleucia in Isauria and lived a monastic life. However, with the accession of the Nicene emperor Theodosius I to power, he was called to Constantinople in 379, where the Arian sect was in power.
