Gregory of Nyssa (English spelling)

A Greek Church Father who established the doctrine of the Trinity, the basis of the Nicene faith, from about 330 to about 395. He was one of the Cappadocian Triumvirate, and the younger brother of Basil the Great. He was from a noble family in Caesarea, Cappadocia, and began his career as an orator, but soon aspired to the priesthood and entered the monastery founded by his brother. He was nominated to become Bishop of Nyssa in about 371, but was deposed by the Arian faction and remained in exile until the death of Emperor Valens (378). He worked hard to secure the victory of the Nicene faction at the Council of Constantinople in 381.

ニカエア信仰の根幹をなす三位一体論を確立したギリシア教父。〈カッパドキア三星〉のひとり。大バシレイオスの弟。カッパドキアのカエサレアの名門の出身で，弁論家として立ったが，ほどなく聖職を志し，兄の建てた修道院に入った。371年ころニュッサNyssaの主教に推されたが，アリウス派によって罷免され，ウァレンス帝の死(378)まで追放されていた。381年のコンスタンティノープル公会議ではニカエア派の勝利のために尽力した。
