A Greek Church Father who established the doctrine of the Trinity, the basis of the Nicene faith, from about 330 to about 395. He was one of the Cappadocian Triumvirate, and the younger brother of Basil the Great. He was from a noble family in Caesarea, Cappadocia, and began his career as an orator, but soon aspired to the priesthood and entered the monastery founded by his brother. He was nominated to become Bishop of Nyssa in about 371, but was deposed by the Arian faction and remained in exile until the death of Emperor Valens (378). He worked hard to secure the victory of the Nicene faction at the Council of Constantinople in 381. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
