Battle paintings - Kassen-e
Yamato-e is a subject of painting. It appeared at the end of the Heian period as a picture scroll depicting a war tale. The oldest documented example is the Gosannen Kassen Emaki (Tokyo National Museum), created in 1171 (Joan 1) by order of Emperor Goshirakawa. It became popular during the Kamakura period, and works such as the Heiji Monogatari Emaki (Boston Museum of Fine Arts and others) and the Mongol Invasion Illustrated Scroll (Imperial Household Agency) remain. In the Muromachi period, it began to be painted on sliding doors and folding screens, such as the Emperor Antoku Picture (Akama Shrine, Shimonoseki City), and in the early modern period, record paintings of contemporary battles such as the Battle of Nagashino, the Battle of Sekigahara, and the Siege of Osaka were also made.
