Patiala (English spelling)

Japanese: パティアーラー（英語表記）Patiālā

A city in the southeastern tip of Punjab, northwest India. Population 238,000 (1991). It faces the Sirhind Canal, which draws water from the Sutlej River. During the British colonial period, it flourished as the capital of the princely state of the same name, and the magnificent palace from that time is now a historical archive and museum. Along with Amritsar, it is the center of Sikh culture and education in Punjab. In addition to traditional cotton and silk weaving industries, electrical machinery and shoe manufacturing industries are also located here. In 1948, the year after the partition of India and Pakistan, eight princely states that chose to belong to India merged to form the Patiala and East Punjab State Union (PEPSU), and made it their capital.

インド北西部，パンジャーブ州南東端の都市。人口23万8000(1991)。サトレジ川から引水するシルヒンド用水路に面する。英領時代には同名の藩王国の主都として栄え，当時の壮麗な宮殿は現在史料館，博物館となっている。アムリッツァルとならぶパンジャーブにおけるシク教文化･教育の中心をなす。綿･絹織物の伝統工業のほか，電機･製靴工業が立地する。インド･パキスタン分離独立の翌1948年，インドへの帰属を選んだ8藩王国が合体してパティアーラー･東パンジャーブ国家連合(PEPSU)をつくり，ここに主都をおいた。
