Ludwigshafen am Rhein

Ludwigshafen am Rhein

A city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany. Population 162,200 (2000). Official name is Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Located on the left bank of the Rhine, it has a river port. It was one of the bridgeheads of the Friedrichsburg fortress built in 1606 in the opposite city of Mannheim (Baden-Württemberg). In the 19th century, it developed as a trading port for the Kingdom of Bavaria, and was incorporated as a city in 1859. Due to its advantageous location in terms of transportation, various industries have been established there, including a chemical plant (BASF) located on a vast site to the north of the city center. It formed an industrial area integrated with the Rhine port of Mannheim, and became the second most populous city in the state after the state capital Mainz. It was damaged by Allied bombing during World War II.
