A city in the western tip of Texas, U.S.A. Population: 579,000 (1994). The commercial, industrial, and mining center of western Texas and southern New Mexico. It faces the Rio Grande River, which forms the border with Mexico, with Ciudad Juarez on the opposite bank. It is the largest city along the border with Mexico, and has an atmosphere of both the United States and Mexico. The climate is warm, but the annual precipitation is low at 240 mm, and it is dry.
