British stage designer and director. His mother was the actress Ellen Terry and his father was an architect. He had been living in Italy since 1908, where he founded the quarterly magazine Masque. In 1912, at the invitation of Stanislavski, he was in charge of the set and lighting for the Moscow Art Theatre's production of Hamlet. His theatrical theory, which expanded the effects of light and color to a fantastical level and emphasized the elements of gesture and dance, and his theory that actors were "marionettes" subordinate to the director, had a major impact on 20th century theater. His major works include Towards a New Theatre (1913). → Related article Rouché Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
