A large woody vine belonging to the subfamily Mimosa of the Fabaceae family, it produces exceptionally large fruits among its cousins. The fruits reach 120cm in length and 12cm in width. Its Japanese name means "algae ball," and is said to have been named after the seeds that wash up on the shore. A large woody vine. The leaves are evergreen, even-numbered bipinnate compound leaves that grow alternately. There are two pairs of pinnae. There are two to four pairs of leaflets, which are slightly distorted oblong, 3 to 8cm long, 1.5 to 4cm wide, and leathery and shiny.
