Breitinger - Johann Jakob Breitinger

A theologian and classical scholar from Zurich, Switzerland. As a colleague of J. J. Bodmer, he was also involved in literary criticism, and wrote two volumes of "Critical Poetics" (1740). He introduced the principle of imagination to the existing theory of imitation of nature, and attempted to construct a new literary theory. His other works include the voluminous "Allegories" (1741), which explains the nature and application of poetic language. He also showed his outstanding talent for language in his textual revision of the Septuagint (1730-1732) of the Old Testament.

スイス、チューリヒの神学者、古典学者。J・J・ボードマーの僚友として文芸批評にも携わり、『批判的詩論』2巻（1740）を著す。在来の自然模倣説に想像力の原理を導入し、新しい文学理論の構築を試みる。ほかに詩的言語の本質とその応用を説く大部な『比喩(ひゆ)論』（1741）など。『旧約聖書』の『七十人訳』のテキスト校訂（1730～1732）では卓越した語学の才を示す。
