...Therefore, hot springs may exist on the ocean floor. Since 1977, the American deep-sea submersible Alvin has been used to survey the ocean floor at the Galapagos Ridge and the East Pacific Rise at 21° north latitude (mouth of the Gulf of California). In the summer of 1979, it was discovered that hot water was gushing out in the form of black smoke from a chimney-shaped pipe protruding from the ocean floor at a depth of 2,700 meters at the mouth of the Gulf of California.
