Memorial service for a thousand monks - Sensoukuyo

It is also read as "Senzoukuyo". It is a memorial service where many monks are invited to recite the Lotus Sutra and other texts. It is also called Senso-e or Senso-ku. It is held in India and China, and has been held in Japan for a long time, becoming popular around the Heian period. Emperor Suzaku held one in 947 (Tenryaku 1) at the lecture hall of Enryaku-ji Temple with the purpose of preventing violent rebellions, and Taira no Kiyomori also held one in Fukuhara in 1169 (Kao 1). In 1220 (Jokyu 2) during the Kamakura period, a thousand monks recited sutras at the Konponchudo Hall of Enryaku-ji Temple to ward off bad luck caused by a comet. Toyotomi Hideyoshi also held a large memorial service for his parents in 1595 (the 4th year of Bunroku) at the sutra hall of the Great Buddha of Hoko-ji Temple, inviting 800 monks from eight sects, including Shingon and Tendai, and has held such services many times since then.

「せんぞうくよう」とも読む。多数の僧侶(そうりょ)が招かれて『法華経(ほけきょう)』などを読誦(どくじゅ)する法要をいう。千僧会(せんそうえ)、千僧供(く)ともいう。インド、中国で行われ、日本でも古くから営まれており、平安時代ごろより盛んとなる。朱雀(すざく)上皇は947年（天暦1）に延暦(えんりゃく)寺講堂において、凶乱を救うという目的のもとに行い、平清盛(きよもり)も1169年（嘉応1）に福原(ふくはら)で催している。鎌倉時代の1220年（承久2）には彗星(すいせい)による不吉を除くために延暦寺根本中堂(こんぽんちゅうどう)において千僧の読経が行われている。豊臣(とよとみ)秀吉もまた、1595年（文禄4）方広(ほうこう)寺大仏の経堂において真言(しんごん)宗、天台宗など八宗から800人の僧侶を招き、父母の供養のための大法要を開催し、それ以降もたびたび行っている。
