…Tradition says that Numa, the second king, instituted her worship, building a circular temple in the shape of an ancient thatched farmhouse south of the Forum in Rome. The temple had no statue, but instead a sacred fire symbolizing the permanence of the state, watched over by a priestess (first two, later six) called the Vestalis.
