A city in the southernmost part of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. It is known for the Itoman fishermen who went fishing in various parts of the South Seas in chestnut boats called "sabani." Men engaged in driving fish and women engaged in fish peddling. After the war, fishing areas were limited to the area around Okinawa, but in 1982, the new Itoman Port for large ships was completed, and a fish processing factory was also established, and it has developed into a commercial and industrial center. Traditional crafts include glass crafts, represented by the Ryukyu Glass Village, and lacquerware. Agriculture, mainly field crops, and livestock farming are also thriving. Being close to Naha City, the population has increased and urbanization has been remarkable in recent years. The Hari boat race on May 4th of the lunar calendar and the Great Tug of War on August 15th of the lunar calendar are events held for the Sea God Festival. The area around the former Miwa Village in the south was the site of the fiercest battle of the Battle of Okinawa, and the Himeyuri Tower and the Kenji Tower were built, and it has been designated as the Okinawa War Site Quasi-National Park. 46.62 km ² . 57,320 people (2010).

沖縄県，沖縄島最南部の市。1971年市制。〈さばに〉と呼ぶくり舟に乗り南洋各地へ出漁した糸満漁夫で知られ，男は追込漁，女は魚行商に従事した。戦後出漁海域が沖縄周辺に限られたが，1982年には大型船用の新糸満港が完成，水産加工工場も立地するなど商工業の一中心として発展している。伝統工芸に，琉球ガラス村に代表されるガラス工芸や漆品がある。畑作を中心とした農業，畜産も盛ん。那覇市に近く，近年は人口増加，都市化が著しい。旧暦５月４日のハーリー船競漕，旧暦８月15日の大綱引きは海神祭の行事。南部の旧三和村一帯は沖縄戦最大の激戦地で，ひめゆりの塔，健児の塔などがたち，沖縄戦跡国定公園に指定されている。46.62km²。５万7320人（2010）。
