This Schmidt camera was designed to track artificial satellites in the Vanguard Project of the International Geophysical Year. It has a 50cm aperture, a three-piece achromatic correction plate, and a 75cm diameter primary mirror, giving it a focal length of 50cm and a wide field of view with an aperture ratio of 1.5° x 30°, allowing it to measure the position of an artificial satellite with an accuracy of 1 arc second. It has three axes: azimuth, altitude, and tracking, and can photograph the 15cm diameter Vanguard 1 satellite at a distance of 5000km. 15 units have been manufactured and are in use around the world.
