A female dance seen in Islamic cultures from Western Asia to the north coast of Africa. Also called Oriental dance, it is characterized by quick hip-swaying movements. It is said that dances involving the shaking and twisting of the belly and hips are particularly prominent in peoples who live in desert regions. This is because on sandy ground, where the ground is not solid enough to jump or stomp, the movement of the feet and hands is restricted, and the dance focuses on the movement of the torso with the feet fixed, a movement often seen in the dances of women of the desert people, such as the Bedouin.
