A type of day laborer in the early modern period, transport workers who passed through inns, as opposed to inn-connecting laborers. They were also called toshihiyo (transit workers), and in some cases referred to as joge (postal couriers). They were engaged in carrying luggage, accompanying and guiding guests, and were also involved in daimyo's alternate attendance tours, pilgrimages to Nikko, individual pilgrimages to shrines and temples, and hot spring cures. The general supervising these laborers controlled the transportation of large amounts of luggage. These laborers included roadside kumosuke and farm village peasants. The general supervising them was a kind of boss with the shippers and each post station along the way. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
