A village in Nishikamo District, northern Aichi Prefecture. Population 4,544 (1995). Located on the northwest bank of the upstream Yahagi River. The northern part is occupied by mountainous areas of the Mino-Mikawa Plateau, and the Tashiro River, Inubuse River, and Ohira River flow south and join the Yahagi River. The lowlands along the rivers are used for rice paddies, but most of the village area is forested. In the past, sericulture and forestry were popular, but in recent years, farmers have begun to have other jobs, and the number of people commuting to Toyota City and other areas is increasing. Japanese paper, which has a tradition dating back to the early modern period, is produced here, and is known as Obara washi paper. The area also produces feldspar and clay, which are used as raw materials for pottery, and are shipped to Seto City, Tajimi City, and other cities.
