Kurchatobium

The name of element 104. The artificial synthesis of element 104 was first reported in 1964 at the Dubna Institute of Nuclear Research in the Soviet Union, and a group of Soviet researchers advocated the use of the name kurchatovium and the element symbol Ku. However, shortly thereafter, a group of American researchers criticized this, and there has been a battle for leadership over the discovery between the Soviet and American groups. The American group advocates the use of the name rutherfordium and the element symbol Rf.

104番元素の元素名。はじめ1964年ソ連のドゥブナ原子核研究所で，104番元素を人工的に合成したことが報告され，これについてソ連の研究者グループはクルチャトビウムという名称とKuという元素記号の採用を主張した。しかし，その後まもなく，これに対するアメリカの研究者グループの批判があり，その発見についてはソ連とアメリカの研究者グループ間で主導権争いがなされてきた。アメリカのグループはラザフォージウムrutherfordiumという名称とRfという元素記号の採用を主張している。
