Japanese: ダライ･ラマ（英語表記）Dalai blama

A popular name for the successive reincarnations of the abbot of Drepung Monastery, who became the sovereign of Tibet in 1642. It is believed by the people that he is a reincarnation of the Bodhisattva Kannon, who is considered the teacher of Tibet. The Gelu sect of Buddhism founded by Tsongkhapa developed rapidly and came into conflict with the previous sects, each of which joined forces with powerful ethnic groups in the east and west to fight. After the death of Gedun Gyatso, who organized the Gelu resistance movement, his reincarnation was chosen as a symbol of unity, following the custom of the opposing faction. This reincarnated Buddha, Sonam Gyatso, went to Qinghai in 1578 to meet Altan Khan of Mongolia and was given the title of the Dalai Lama.

1642年にチベットの主権者となったデープン寺住持の歴代転生者に対する俗称。チベットの教化主とされる観音菩薩の化身が転生しているものと民間に信じられている。ツォンカパの開宗したゲルー派仏教が急速に発展して従来の諸派と対立し，それぞれ東西の有力民族と結託して抗争した。ゲルー派の抵抗運動を組織したゲンドゥン･ギャツォの没後，勢力結束の象徴として，反対派の習慣にならってその転生者が選ばれた。この転生活仏ソーナム･ギャツォは1578年青海に赴いてモンゴルのアルタン･ハーンと会い，ダライ･ラマの称号を受けた。
