…1967年のイギリス海峡におけるトリーキャニオン号の乗揚事故を契機に，IMOによって同海峡に往復航路を分離する分離航路が設定されたのが海上交通管制の端緒といえ，アメリカやカナダでもタンカーの衝突，乗揚事故を契機にして，海上交通管理システムが70年代の初めに導入された。日本では，海上交通安全法に基づき，東京湾，伊勢湾，瀬戸内海の3海域の狭水道に11航路が設定され，ここでは特別な交通方法が定められている。とくに巨大船などは航路航行予定時刻をあらかじめ海上保安庁に通報し，同庁は事前に他の巨大船などとの航行時刻を調整し，航路管制信号などによって他の大型船の航行を規制している。…
