Gazette of Yongzhou

Japanese: 雍州府志 - ようしゅうふし
Gazette of Yongzhou

A geography book of Yamashiro Province (central and southern Kyoto Prefecture). 10 volumes in total. Established in 1684 (Jokyo 1), published in 1686. Yongzhou was the name of the province where Luoyang, the capital of ancient China, was located, and Yamashiro Province was named in comparison to Kyoto in Japan. The author is Kurokawa Doyu. The style of the compilation imitates the "Daimin Ittōshi," and the descriptions are detailed, using classical Chinese. The contents are divided into 10 sections, starting from the origin of the establishment of Yamashiro Province, such as the scenery, county names, castle sites, customs, mountains and rivers, shrines, temples, souvenirs, historical sites, and tombs. The souvenir section in particular is the most detailed, covering the province's special products and is excellent as an economic resource. It is included in the 10th volume of the "Shinshū Kyoto Sōshō," and in the 8th volume of "Zokuzoku Gunsho Ruiju." Dosuke studied under Hayashi Doshun, a native of Aki, and became knowledgeable about ancient and modern times. He served the Aki domain as a Confucian physician. Later in life he lived in Kyoto, and passed away in 1691 (Genroku 4).
