D -Glucuronic acid is widely distributed in the animal and plant kingdoms as a component of mucopolysaccharides such as chondroitin sulfate, heparin, and hyaluronic acid, and polysaccharides such as gum arabic and wheat straw. It exists in small amounts in free form in blood and urine. It can be obtained in various ways, such as hydrolysis of plant gums, mucilages, and glycosides, partial reduction of D -glucaric acid-1,4-lactone, and oxidation of 1,2,3,4-tetra- O -acetyl- D -glucopyranose. The β-anomer has a melting point of 165 °C. +11.7 → +36.3° (water). p K _a 3.18. Soluble in water and ethanol. It shows general properties of a reducing sugar. When heated in hydrochloric acid, it decomposes into carbon dioxide and furfural. This reaction is used for detection and quantification. 3,6-Lactone C ₆ H ₈ O ₆ (176.13) has a melting point of 176-178 °C. +20° (water). LD ₅₀ 10700 mg/kg (rat, oral). It is related to detoxification. When animals are administered poisons that are not easily oxidized in the body, such as camphor, chloral, and phenol, they become glycosides of D -glucuronic acid in the liver and are excreted in the urine.
