Tenryu [Village] - Tenryu
A village in Shimoina County at the southern tip of Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,445 (1995). It is located at the southwestern end of the Akaishi Mountains and in the middle reaches of the Tenryu River, bordering Aichi Prefecture to the south and Shizuoka Prefecture to the southeast. Most of the village area is covered by forests and wilderness, with very little arable land. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and in addition to rice and sericulture, plum, tea and shiitake mushroom cultivation and livestock raising are also carried out. The village is known as a treasure trove of folk performing arts, and events include the Sakabe Winter Festival, the Mukagata Purification Festival and the Mitsushima Procession Festival. The area along the Tenryu River belongs to Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park.

長野県南端,下伊那郡の村。人口2445(1995)。赤石山脈南西端,天竜川中流域に位置し,南は愛知県,南東は静岡県に接する。村域の大部分は山林・原野で占められ,耕地はきわめて少ない。主産業は農林業で,米作や養蚕のほか,梅,茶,シイタケの栽培や畜産が行われる。民俗芸能の宝庫として知られ,坂部(さかんべ)の冬祭,向方(むかがた)のお潔め祭,満島のお練り祭などが行われる。天竜川沿岸は天竜奥三河国定公園に属する。
