A lake located in the southeast of Ibaraki Prefecture, south of Kitaura Lake. It belongs to Kamisu City and Itako City, and borders Chiba Prefecture to the south. It is a eutrophic lake with an area of ​​7.3 square kilometers, a circumference of 15 kilometers, a maximum depth of 7 meters, and a water surface elevation of 0 meters. Its name comes from the waves that form when the water flows backwards at high tide. The Crocodile River from Kitaura Lake and the former Kitatone River (Hitachi Tone River) from Lake Kasumigaura flow into the lake. Reclamation is progressing in the surrounding area. It has the highest catch of mullet and clams in Ibaraki Prefecture. Part of the reclaimed land has become the residential area of ​​Itako New Town. It is included in Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park.

茨城県南東部、北浦の南にある湖。神栖市(かみすし)と、潮来市(いたこし)とに属し、南は千葉県に接する。面積7.3平方キロメートル、周囲15キロメートル、最大深度7メートル、水面高度0メートルの富栄養湖。名称は満潮時に逆流して波浪がたつことによる。北浦からの鰐(わに)川と霞ヶ浦(かすみがうら)からの旧北利根(とね)川(常陸(ひたち)利根川)が流入する。周囲は干拓が進んでいる。ボラ、シジミの漁獲量は茨城県第1位。干拓地の一部は潮来ニュータウン住宅地となった。水郷筑波国定公園(すいごうつくばこくていこうえん)に含まれる。
