A derivative of puerto (port), it means "of the port" or "port inhabitants." In South America, it often refers to the citizens of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Since the Spanish colonial period, the city has been important as a trading port, and its citizens came to be called porteños, while the residents of the inland areas were called provincianos. Porteños generally have a high cultural standard and are Western-style, but tend to neglect indigenous elements and traditions, which often causes resentment among the people of the inland areas. puerto(港)からの派生語で〈港の〉もしくは〈港の住民〉を意味する。
