Abbreviation: UAL. The world's second largest airline, based in Illinois. With bases in Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, London, and Narita, it operates routes to 201 cities in the United States and around the world. It also operates 430 shuttle flights per day to cities in the western part of the country. It first served in Japan in 1983. In December 2002, it filed for bankruptcy protection, but has since restructured and is now a member of the Star Alliance airline alliance.
