Mikadoageha (common jay)

A butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. This species is a warm-climate butterfly, found in the prefectures of Mie, Wakayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi in Honshu, the prefectures of Tokushima, Kochi, and Ehime in Shikoku, and throughout Kyushu (including Tsushima), as well as in the southwestern islands of Tanegashima, Yakushima, Amami Oshima, Okinawa, and the Yaeyama Islands. Outside of Japan, it is widely distributed from Taiwan and southern China to Southeast Asia, with Japan being its northernmost distribution limit. This species in Kochi City is a nationally designated special natural monument. The Japanese name comes from the scientific name mikado (not currently in use). The wingspan is about 70 mm. It is very similar in size and wing shape to the bluebottle, but its wings have many pale blue or pale yellow spots. In mainland Japan (excluding the Ryukyu Islands), the number of times they emerge each year is variable, with some species ranging from univoltine to trivoltine. The larvae feed on plants such as the Magnoliaceae family's Magnoliaceae tree and the Chinese Magnolia (native to North America, planted in gardens), and spend the winter as pupae.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目アゲハチョウ科に属するチョウ。本種は暖地性のもので、本州では三重・和歌山・広島・山口の諸県、四国では徳島・高知・愛媛の諸県、九州では全県下（対馬(つしま)を含む）に産し、また種子島(たねがしま)、屋久島(やくしま)、奄美(あまみ)大島、沖縄本島、八重山(やえやま)諸島などの南西諸島にも分布する。国外では台湾、中国南部から東南アジアにかけて分布が広く、日本はその分布北限となる。高知市の本種は国指定の特別天然記念物になっている。和名は学名に与えられたmikado（現在は使用されない）からきている。はねの開張は70ミリ内外。大きさ、はねの形はアオスジアゲハそっくりであるが、はねには淡青色ないし淡黄色の多くの斑点(はんてん)がある。日本本土（南西諸島を除く）では年発生回数は不定、一化のものから三化に至る変異がある。幼虫の食草はモクレン科のオガタマノキ、タイサンボク（北アメリカ原産、庭園に植栽）などで、蛹(さなぎ)の状態で冬を越す。
