Ryuju

Japanese:
Ryuju
An Indian Buddhist monk who lived around 150-250. He was the master of Mahayana Buddhism. His Sanskrit name was Nagarjuna. He was also known as Ryumyo or Ryusho. Nagarjuna was a Brahmin from South India. He became a monk and first studied Hinayana Buddhism, but later he was given Mahayana scriptures by an old monk in the Himalayas, and he is said to have followed Mahayana Buddhism ever since. There is also a legend that he went to the Dragon Palace in the South Seas and obtained many Mahayana scriptures. He wrote many commentaries on Mahayana scriptures, and spent his later years in Mount Kurohachi, upstream of the Krishna River in South India. He broke the Hinayana philosophy of existence, clarified the nonexistence of unchanging substance in all things (emptiness), rejected the two extremes of existence and nonexistence, and established the Madhyamaka view, becoming a theoretical pioneer of Mahayana Buddhism. Nagarjuna's lineage is called the Madhyamaka school, and is considered the founder of eight sects in China and Japan, and the third in Shingon Buddhism. His works include "Madhyamaka-stra", "The Twelve Gates Treatise", "Mahaprajnaparamita-sha", and "The Ten Stages of Vibhāsa-stra".
