A city in central Thailand, capital of the province of the same name. Located on the left bank of the mouth of the Menam River (Chao Phraya River), it is also called Paknam (meaning "mouth of the river"). Population 48,960 (1980). Bordering the south of the capital Bangkok, it has long been known as a strategic military and commercial location. The estuary area is lush with mangroves and nipa palms, and is also a base for coastal fishing. Traditionally, rice cultivation was the main occupation of farmers, but since the 1960s, factory construction has progressed rapidly, and it has become Thailand's central industrial area. タイ中部の都市で同名県の県都。メナム川(チャオプラヤー川)の河口左岸に位置し,パークナムPaknam(〈河口〉の意)とも呼ばれる。人口4万8960(1980)。首都バンコクの南に接し,古くから軍事・通商上の要衝として知られた。河口地帯にはマングローブやニッパヤシが繁茂し,沿岸漁業の基地でもある。伝統的には稲作が農民のおもな生業であるが,1960年代以降,工場建設が急速に進み,タイの中心的な工業地帯になった。
