Three Pure Land Sutras

Three fundamental scriptures that explain Pure Land thought (the teachings of Amida Buddha and paradise). Collective name for the two volumes of the Sutra of Immeasurable Life (translated by Kousogai), the one volume of the Sutra of Contemplation of Immeasurable Life (translated by Kyoryoyasha), and the one volume of the Sutra of Immeasurable Life (translated by Kumarajiva). There are a great number of Chinese translations of sutras that explain Pure Land thought, about 290 in total, but Honen (Genku) selected the above three sutras from among them, named them the "Three Pure Land Sutras," and made them the fundamental scriptures of the Jodo sect. His disciple Shinran then also made them the fundamental scriptures of the Jodo Shinshu sect. Therefore, although this name is used in Japanese Pure Land Buddhism (Jodo sect, Jodo Shinshu sect), these three sutras have also been believed and respected as the most important scriptures in Indian and Chinese Pure Land Buddhism.

浄土思想（阿弥陀仏(あみだぶつ)、極楽(ごくらく)の教え）を説く三部の根本経典。『無量寿経(むりょうじゅきょう)』2巻（康僧鎧(こうそうがい)訳）、『観無量寿経(かんむりょうじゅきょう)』1巻（畺良耶舎(きょうりょうやしゃ)訳）、『阿弥陀経』1巻（鳩摩羅什(くまらじゅう)訳）を総称した名称。浄土思想を説く漢訳経論は約290部と非常に多いが、法然(ほうねん)（源空）はそのなかから上記の三経を選択して「浄土三部経」と名づけ、浄土宗の根本聖典とした。ついで、その弟子親鸞(しんらん)もそれらを浄土真宗の根本聖典とした。したがって、この名称は日本浄土教（浄土宗、浄土真宗）で使われる名称であるが、インド・中国浄土教でもこの三経はもっとも重要な経典として信仰され尊重されてきた。
