Greenwich - Gurinij (English spelling) Greenwich

Greenwich - Gurinij (English spelling) Greenwich

A borough in the east of Greater London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It lies along the right bank of the River Thames. It has an area of 47 square kilometers and a population of 214,540 (2001). It is also called Greenwich. A royal palace was built here in the 15th century. In the 17th century, an observatory famous for Greenwich Mean Time was built on a 50-meter-high hill overlooking the River Thames, and the prime meridian was determined to pass through the building. The site of the royal palace is now the Naval College, and the observatory was moved to a nearby location after World War II to avoid the nuisance of London's smoke and lighting. The old observatory building, designed by architect Wren, is now the Astronomical Museum, and the meridian line laid on the ground and the standard clock on the gatepost have been preserved. Greenwich was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1997 (World Cultural Heritage).
