Upper Saxony - Obersachsen

...Historically, the former roughly corresponds to the area settled by the Saxon people in the Early Middle Ages, while the latter was the core of the Electorate of Saxony in the early modern period. When it is necessary to distinguish between the two, the one is usually called Lower Saxony and the other Upper Saxony (Figure).
