Born in the first year of Tenbun. A Rinzai sect monk. He studied at the Ashikaga School and studied under Koin Soken and Shorei Sokin at Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, where he inherited the teachings of Sojin. In the first year of Tensho, he became the chief priest of Daitoku-ji Temple. He became the founder of Sogen-in Temple, which Toyotomi Hideyoshi established for the memorial of Oda Nobunaga. He was the Zen teacher of Sen no Rikyu. He passed away on January 17, 1600, at the age of 66. He was from Echizen (Fukui Prefecture). His secular surname was Asakura.
