Kokei Sochin

Japanese: 古渓宗陳 - こけいそうちん

1532-1597 A monk from the Sengoku to Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Born in the first year of Tenbun. A Rinzai sect monk. He studied at the Ashikaga School and studied under Koin Soken and Shorei Sokin at Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, where he inherited the teachings of Sojin. In the first year of Tensho, he became the chief priest of Daitoku-ji Temple. He became the founder of Sogen-in Temple, which Toyotomi Hideyoshi established for the memorial of Oda Nobunaga. He was the Zen teacher of Sen no Rikyu. He passed away on January 17, 1600, at the age of 66. He was from Echizen (Fukui Prefecture). His secular surname was Asakura. His posthumous name was Zen Master Daiji Kosho. His other name was Hoan.

天文(てんぶん)元年生まれ。臨済(りんざい)宗。足利学校にまなび,京都大徳寺の江隠宗顕(こういん-そうけん),笑嶺宗訢(しょうれい-そうきん)に師事し,宗訢の法をつぐ。天正(てんしょう)元年大徳寺住持。豊臣秀吉が織田信長追善のためにたてた総見院の開山(かいさん)となる。千利休の禅の師。慶長2年1月17日死去。66歳。越前(えちぜん)(福井県)出身。俗姓は朝倉。諡号(しごう)は大慈広照禅師。別号に蒲庵(ほあん)。
