(1) Triode A mesh or grid-like electrode called a grid is inserted between the cathode and anode of a diode tube. A positive voltage is applied to the anode (tens to hundreds of volts in small tubes) and a negative voltage is applied to the grid (-several to -several tens of volts) relative to the cathode. Electrons flow through the gaps in the grid to the anode, but a slight change in the grid voltage causes a large change in the anode current, which has an amplifying effect.
