In vertebrates, many animals that have internal fertilization through mating have a copulatory organ as an external reproductive organ. The male's copulatory organ is a specialized protrusion that inserts into the female's genital opening and injects semen, so it is generally called the intromittent organ. In females, the cloaca, which is the common exit for the digestive tract, urethra, and oviduct, or the vagina, which is the birth canal through which young are born, also serves as a copulatory organ, and often does not show a specialized structure.
