Porphyrites, an Egyptian stone of this color, was used for portraits and sarcophagi of members of the imperial family, and the clothing of statues of Christ up until the 6th century was of this color. The parchment used for noble manuscripts up until the end of the Middle Ages was also dyed with this color (such as the Vienna Book of Genesis). …
