The African rail, Himantornis haematopus , which is considered to be the most primitive rail that lives in the forests of West Africa, nests in tree cavities, and its chicks are covered in mottled yellow-brown downy feathers like those of shorebirds. Most other species nest on the ground in lush grasslands or thickets, and some species nest several meters up in trees. …
