A leader of the Iranian Kurdish people. He was a member of the Shaqaq tribe, a nomadic Kurdish tribe living in the mountainous region west of Lake Urmia. In the second half of the 19th century, he established a major power in West Azerbaijan Province by controlling the Kurdish farmers, the Kurmanji, the Shiite Azeris, and the Nestorian Assyrians who lived in the plains. During the Iranian Constitutional Revolution, he sided with the Qajar dynasty. After the First World War, he became a nationalist, attracted by the idea of a Kurdish state, as outlined in Wilson's 14 Points.

イランのクルド族の指導者。ウルミエ湖の西の山岳地帯に遊牧するクルドの一支族シャカク族の出身。19世紀後半，平原部に定住するクルド系の農民クルマンジー，シーア派を信奉するアゼリー，ネストリウス派のアッシリア人を支配下にいれて西アゼルバイジャン州に一大勢力を築いた。イラン立憲革命に際してはカージャール朝側にまわった。第1次大戦が起きると，ウィルソンの14ヵ条に盛りこまれたクルド国家構想にひかれてナショナリストに転じた。
