Agano Street - Agano Street

...The central city of Chichibu and valley-mouth settlements such as Ogano, Yoshida, and Minano developed, and from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, silk markets were held almost daily in one of these towns. Before the Meiji period, the main roads leading from the Chichibu Basin to Edo were Kumagaya-dori (currently National Route 140), which passed through the narrow section of Yanase, Kawagoe-dori, which crossed Kayunida Pass, and Agano-dori (currently National Route 299), which crossed Shomaru Pass. Agano-dori in particular was an important Silk Road for transporting Chichibu silk. After the Meiji period, these roads were widened and improved as prefectural and national roads, and in November 1982, the Shomaru Tunnel (1,916m long) on National Route 299 was opened.
