Christmas tree

Japanese: クリスマス･ツリー（英語表記）Christmas tree

A coniferous tree such as a fir tree decorated with lights and gold and silver ornaments. It has spread as a Christmas custom throughout the world, including the Christian world, but its origins are not particularly old in Europe. It is said to have originated in the German cultural sphere, and the oldest example known today is a copperplate print by L. Cranach the Elder from the early 16th century. A travelogue from 1605 about the Alsace region also states that in Strasbourg (now Strasbourg), trees decorated with roses made from colored paper, apples, sugar, and other things are set up at Christmas.

モミの木などの針葉樹に，灯や金銀の飾りをつけたもの。クリスマスの風習として，キリスト教世界をはじめ世界中に広がっているが，その起源はヨーロッパでもけっして古いものではない。ドイツ文化圏からおこったといわれ，現在知られる最も古い例は，16世紀初めのL.クラーナハ(父)の銅版画に描かれたものである。また1605年のアルザス地方の旅行記には，シュトラスブルク(現，ストラスブール)ではクリスマスに色紙で作ったバラの花やリンゴや砂糖などを飾った木を立てると記されている。
