Prince Katsurahara

He was a member of the imperial family and a government official in the early Heian period. He was the third son of Emperor Kanmu. He was the brother-in-law of Emperor Saga, but was unable to ascend to the throne because his mother was Shinshu, the daughter of Tajihi Nagano, and was of humble surname. He served as Jibu, Okura, Shikibukyo, governor of Hitachi and Kozuke provinces, and governor of Dazaifu (Dazaifu city), but all of these were more of honorary positions. In 831, at the age of 46, he was promoted to the rank of Ippon. He enjoyed learning from a young age, read historical biographies, and never forgot the lessons of politics, past and present. He was modest and never arrogant. He also served as Shikibukyo for a long time, so he was well-versed in the ancient texts, and his etiquette stood out among the other princes. It is said that his funeral was held simply, as per his will.

平安初期の皇族で官人。桓武天皇の第3子。嵯峨天皇の義兄に当たるが,母が多治比長野の娘真宗で卑姓のため皇位には就けなかった。治部,大蔵,式部卿,常陸,上野両国の太守や,大宰府(太宰府市)の長官を歴任したが,いずれも名誉職的な意味あいが強かった。天長8(831)年,46歳で一品に叙せられた。若くして学問を好み,史伝を歴覧し,古今の政治の教訓を忘れなかった。慎みぶかく驕ることはなかった。また式部卿を長く務めたので旧典に通じ,礼儀も諸親王のなかで抜きんでていた。遺言により葬儀も質素に行われたという。
