Oxo

[ I ] A prefix used to name carbonyl compounds as oxygen substitutes for hydrogen compounds. Example: 3-oxobutanoic acid, CH ₃ COCH ₂ COOH. [ II ] The name of the anionic ligand O ^2- for a metal atom.
