It existed as the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the former Russian Soviet Republic, but in February 1992 it was renamed the Republic of Bashkortostan and joined the Russian Federation. It was established as an autonomous republic in 1919. Its area is 143,600 km2 and its population is 4,008,000 (1992). Its capital is Ufa. It is located between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains, and borders the Republic of Tatarstan and the Udmurt Republic in the west, Chelyabinsk Oblast in the east, and Orenburg Oblast in the south. 旧ソ連邦ロシア共和国内においてバシキール自治ソビエト社会主義共和国として存続してきたが,1992年2月にバシコルトスタン共和国に改称し,ロシア連邦に加わっている。1919年に自治共和国として成立。面積14万3600km2,人口400万8000(1992)。首都ウファ。ボルガ川とウラル山脈の間に位置し,西部でタタールスタン共和国,ウドムルト共和国に,東はチェリャビンスク州,南はオレンブルグ州に接している。
