It existed as the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the former Russian Soviet Republic, but in February 1992 it was renamed the Republic of Bashkortostan and joined the Russian Federation. It was established as an autonomous republic in 1919. Its area is 143,600 km2 and its population is 4,008,000 (1992). Its capital is Ufa. It is located between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains, and borders the Republic of Tatarstan and the Udmurt Republic in the west, Chelyabinsk Oblast in the east, and Orenburg Oblast in the south.
