An Italian composer who represents the Neapolitan school of opera in the 18th century. Also known as Pergolesi. Born in Jesi in central Italy, he studied music in Naples. He was active as a composer of religious songs and operas, mainly in Naples, but died at the early age of 26. His work The Maid Who Became a Marriage (1733), written as an intermezzo (interlude) to the opera seria The Noble Prisoner, became so popular that it began to be performed independently, becoming a pioneering work of opera buffa (opera). His other widely known work is the sacred song Stabat Mater, which is also performed as a chorus for female voices. 18世紀ナポリ派オペラを代表するイタリアの作曲家。ペルゴレージともいう。イタリア中部のイエジに生まれ，ナポリで音楽を学ぶ。同地を中心に宗教曲やオペラの作曲家として活躍したが26歳で夭逝(ようせい)。オペラ・セリア《尊大な囚人》のインテルメッツォ（幕間劇）として書かれた《奥様になった女中（奥様女中）》（1733年）は，人気を博し独立して上演されるようになり，オペラ・ブッファ（オペラ）の先駆的作品となった。ほかに，女声合唱曲としても演奏される宗教歌曲《スタバト・マーテル》が広く知られる。没後名声が高まりその名をかたった作品が多数出回ったため，偽作の疑いのあるものも少なくない。→スタバト・マーテル
