An Italian composer who represents the Neapolitan school of opera in the 18th century. Also known as Pergolesi. Born in Jesi in central Italy, he studied music in Naples. He was active as a composer of religious songs and operas, mainly in Naples, but died at the early age of 26. His work The Maid Who Became a Marriage (1733), written as an intermezzo (interlude) to the opera seria The Noble Prisoner, became so popular that it began to be performed independently, becoming a pioneering work of opera buffa (opera). His other widely known work is the sacred song Stabat Mater, which is also performed as a chorus for female voices. His fame grew after his death, and many works were produced in his name, so many of them are suspected to be forgeries. →Stabat Mater→Related article Stravinsky Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
