Fruitlands

...The Transcendentalist social reform movement can be seen in the Brook Farm communal living group in the suburbs of Boston, which Ripley presided over. N. Hawthorne, who participated in the group, wrote a novel about the tragedy in which their dream of an ideal society was shattered. The Fruitlands (a vegetarian living group, 1842-43) in the poor village of Harvard, centered around AB Alcott and his family, also ended in a miserable failure, as recorded by Alcott's daughter Louisa.
